The CPPCC members suggested that: Recalling calligraphy classes is compulsory for primary and secondary schools

"Did you write today?" This seemingly ridiculous question is really ridiculous. With the popularity of computers, most people have fewer and fewer opportunities to write with a pen. They often hear people complain: "I can't write!"

Wu Weishan, the member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and the president of the Chinese Sculpture Academy, called for strengthening calligraphy teaching in the compulsory education curriculum for primary and secondary schools across the country and let calligraphy enter the classroom.

Calligraphy is a treasure of Chinese traditional culture. In 2009, it was selected as a representative list of UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage. "It can be said that calligraphy is the main carrier of Chinese civilization and the most representative symbol of traditional Chinese culture," said Wu Weishan.

However, in recent years, the development of the Internet has changed people's traditional writing habits, and the popularity of Chinese calligraphy has also declined.

Calligraphy learning, once an important part of young people's education, has gradually drifted away, especially as the younger generation is facing a serious “writing crisis”: the level of Chinese characters written by elementary and middle school students is worrying; on the other hand, many schools “write”. Classes are nominal, and classes are often cancelled or marginalized.

Wu Weishan believed that we should vigorously promote the culture of Chinese characters, vigorously popularize the calligraphy of Chinese characters, use calligraphy education as the basis of Chinese humanities education, and continue the lifeblood of traditional Chinese culture.

“Japan is a required course in elementary and junior high schools. Calligraphy is an elective course in high school and a calligraphy profession in liberal arts. Our close neighbors pay more attention to our cultural heritage than ours.” said Wu Weishan. Starting from the strategy of a powerful country with culture, it is a very urgent and important basic work to bring calligraphy back to the classroom.

"It is recommended that national administrative measures be adopted to restore the calligraphy class as a required course in the compulsory education curriculum for primary and secondary schools, and to highlight the basic status of the writing of Chinese characters in humanities education," said Wu Weishan.
